Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brewed coffee, cooled
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (for buttercream)
  • 1 cup butter (for buttercream)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (optional, for flavor variations)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt; add to the creamed mixture alternately with the coffee and milk.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the buttercream, beat the butter until creamy, then gradually add the caramel sauce and mix until well combined.
  9. Once the cakes are cool, frost the top of one cake layer with buttercream, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  10. Drizzle with additional caramel sauce if desired and serve.

Notes

For a richer caramel flavor, consider adding a pinch of sea salt to the buttercream.
