Description
Quick and comforting stovetop sautéed cinnamon apples that evoke the warm flavors of apple pie.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced about 1/2 inch thick
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
- Pinch of fine sea salt
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon water, if needed
- Optional: a splash of apple cider or orange juice
- Optional: a sprinkle of chopped toasted nuts for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them into even pieces.
- Heat a medium skillet over medium heat and add the butter, letting it melt until it foams and smells nutty.
- Add the apple slices to the pan in a single layer. Let them sit for 30 to 40 seconds to begin coloring, then toss gently.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt over the apples and stir to coat each slice.
- Add the lemon juice and optional vanilla extract. If the pan looks dry, add a tablespoon of water or apple cider and stir.
- Continue cooking for another 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often to cook evenly.
- Taste to check for doneness; cook longer for softer apples or remove for more bite.
- Turn off the heat and let the apples sit for a minute before serving.
- Spoon apples into bowls or over pancakes, oatmeal, or ice cream.
Notes
For added flavor, consider a tiny pinch of nutmeg. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to four days.
