Description

Savory and cozy bites featuring caramelized onions and melted Gruyère cheese in crispy puff pastry.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 package of puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Caramelize the onions: In a pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until deep golden and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes.
  3. Deglaze: Add the beef broth and thyme, season with salt and pepper, and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  4. Prepare the pastry: Roll out the puff pastry and cut into squares to fit muffin tins.
  5. Assemble the cups: Place pastry squares in muffin tins and fill with the caramelized onion mixture.
  6. Add cheese: Top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
  7. Egg wash: Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg.
  8. Bake: Bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For vegetarian bites, use vegetable broth and plant-based butter; for dairy-free options, choose vegan cheese. Assemble just before baking for best texture.
