Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (475ml) whole milk, lukewarm
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (90g) all-purpose flour
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish and place it in an oven-safe tray filled with water.
  2. Separate the egg whites from the yolks, placing them in two different mixing bowls.
  3. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until pale and fluffy.
  4. Add melted butter, lukewarm milk, and vanilla to the egg yolk mixture, mixing until combined.
  5. Sift in the flour and salt, stirring until no lumps remain.
  6. Whip the egg whites in a clean bowl until stiff peaks form.
  7. Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the batter.
  8. Transfer the batter to the baking dish and smooth the top.
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until golden brown and slightly jiggly in the center.
  10. Cool to room temperature, refrigerate for a few hours, slice, and serve.
